Leota Elaine “Lea” Derrick Young passed to God’s greater glory on January 11, 2015, after a long, accomplished and loving life. She was born to Cora and Theodore Glenn on May 20, 1934, at Loyal, Oklahoma, where her grandparents on both sides had homesteaded in the Cheyenne and Arapaho Run of 1892. She was the third child and first daughter. Her father died when Lea was two and she was reared by her mother and maternal grandmother, Effie Maxwell.
After graduation from Loyal High School, she married John Henry Derrick on June 1, 1952. They settled in Enid, where John worked at Champlin Refinery. They were blessed by children, Gary Wayne, born November 3, 1953, and Michele Rae, born March 1, 1955. On November 8, 1962, they were blessed and surprised by the birth of twins, Janet Lynn and Janice Lea.
Lea was a confident woman and skilled in many areas. It surprised no one when she opened Derrick Canvas Shop in 1970 in the converted garage. Derrick Canvas Shop made custom boat covers, truck tarps, awnings and other canvas products. Her business grew and she moved to a stand-alone facility in an Enid industrial park in 1981.
Her husband, John, died in 1983. Lea continued her work. She sold Derrick Canvas Shop in 1998. The business still continues and enjoys a regional reputation for its quality products and customer service.
To fill her time and meet people after John’s death, she learned to golf and thoroughly enjoyed the game. Through her golf acquaintances, she met and married Robert “Bobby” Young on July 3, 2004. Bobby is an excellent golfer and they spent much time together enjoying the game. More importantly, they enjoyed one another’s love and affection, which was invaluable in her final years.
Lea is survived by her husband, Bobby; by her brother, Lester Glenn (Riverton, WY), and her brother and his spouse, Alvin “Blackie” and Berdena Glenn (Oklahoma City); by her children and their spouses, Fran and Gary Derrick (Oklahoma City), Michele Derrick (Boston, MA), Lynn and Michael Ballard (Enid), and Janice and Mike Sellers (Bixby, OK); by her grandchildren, Meghan and Lee Brasuell (Stillwater, OK), Erin Stacy (Merced, CA), Anna Drew Derrick (Nashville, TN), Kristin Stacy (Lubbock, TX), Jane Derrick (Oklahoma City), Alaina Ballard (Oklahoma City), Brandon Sellers (Bixby, OK), Grace Ballard (Enid), Bryan Sellers (Bixby, OK), and great-grandchildren, Clark Brasuell and Derrick Brasuell (Stillwater, OK); and by Bobby’s children, Linda and Billy Ray Young (Tulsa), Patsy and Dean Smart (Seiling, OK), and Pam and Bobby Young Jr. (Inola, OK), and their children and grandchildren.
