Longtime Northwest Oklahoma music educator Cindy Wieden passed away July 7, 2018 at the age of 62. For over thirty years, Cindy shared the joy of music with children around the region, teaching at schools in the Covington-Douglas, Waynoka, Aline-Cleo, Carmen-Dacoma, and Enid districts until her retirement in 2012. As an educator, Cindy was known for her caring manner of instruction, her commitment to making music worthwhile for each student, and her colorful classroom, populated at all times by a countless number of frogs - pictures, toys, and other representations - given to her by loving students throughout her career. Cindy Lou Frey was born July 7, 1956 to George and Mitzi (Woods) Frey, the second of three children. Cindy grew up in Carmen and knew from a young age that music was her life’s calling. She began performing by joining her father to sing at church services, a practice she would continue throughout her life. She continued learning and performing music throughout her school years and, among other activities, became the drum majorette for her high school band. She graduated from Carmen-Dacoma High School in 1974. Cindy chose to pursue her college education at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva. She graduated from Northwestern in 1978 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education in the field of Public School Music, with emphases in both vocal and instrumental music. It was at Northwestern that Cindy met Royce Wieden, and they married May 14, 1976. She and Royce were blessed with two children, their son Clinton and daughter Caitlin. The family made their home in Fairview, a central location between Cindy’s work in Enid and Royce’s work in the oil fields. Cindy’s greatest joys came from the pride and love she felt for her family, and she was a devoted wife and mother. In her personal life, Cindy’s love of music extended to the things she enjoyed every day. She loved the music of the 1970s and had a fondness for musical theatre and the Muppets. Outside of music, Cindy also loved art, especially drawing, painting, and crafts. She also loved to shop, particularly for eclectic pieces that expressed her unique personal style. Cindy held a deep personal faith and for a time served as a lay servant for the United Methodist Church. She branched out from music professionally as well, working for a time as the manager of a clothing store. She took great joy in life’s simple pleasures, like a singing bird, a beautiful sunset, or just sitting at home with her cats. Cindy did her best to bring joy to others each day. She loved, she was loved, and she will be missed by all who shared that love. Cindy is survived by her husband Royce, son Clinton, and daughter Caitlin; her sister, Suzan McCarthy of Medicine Lodge, Kansas; her brother, Scotty Frey of Elk City; her aunt, Cordelia Anthony of Aline; her extended family of in-laws, nephews, nieces, and cousins; friends new, old, and lifelong; and the thousands of students whose lives she touched. Memorials in Cindy’s name may be made to Alzheimer’s research at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of funds.
