Mabel was born on December 6, 1914 in Hillsboro, KS to Isaac and Nettie Cornelsen Wiebe and died May 8, 2012 in Enid, OK. In 1920 her parents moved to Texas County near Hooker, OK where she attended country school. She accepted the Lord as her Savior in her teen years and was baptized, joining the Adams Mennonite Brethren Church. She taught Sunday School and enjoyed singing in the choir and glee club. After graduating from high school she attended Tabor College at Hillsboro, KS. Mabel had an older sister and her husband living near Enid, Henry and Esther Hamm, so Mabel moved in with them to help with household chores. They were attending Enid Mennonite Brethren Church where she took notice of a young handsome man, George Toews. Mabel and George were married on April 23, 1939 at Hooker, OK. They celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary 15 days ago. George and Mabel spent their married life in the Enid area being engaged in farming and ranching. Two sons, Wilferd and Ronald were born into their family. Mabel was a member of Enid Mennonite Brethren Church. Mabel worked many years at Phillips University and spent many hours volunteering at St Mary’s Hospital. She especially enjoyed baking cookies for the grandchildren. Her deep concern was that her children and grandchildren lived a Christian life. In 2004 she and George moved to Golden Oaks Village where they resided until her death.

She is survived by her husband, George Toews, son, Wilferd and Kay Toews of Enid, OK, daughter –in-law, Neva Toews of Lucien, OK, four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. She leaves one brother, Ernest Wiebe and wife Mary of Guymon, OK and sister, Sarah Toews of Enid, OK and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Ronald Toews; one brother, Albert Wiebe; and sisters, Esther Hamm, Bessie Voth and Helen Hamm.

Memorials may be made to Enid Mennonite Brethren Church with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the memorial.
