Brenda was born February 10, 1941, near Carter’s Creek, Mississippi, to Roy Wakefield and Lutie (Rayborn) Lawrence. She graduated from Carter’s Creek High School in 1959 and later that year married Melvin Lee (Mel) Spencer, an Air Force member. Together they were on assignment with the Air Force in Biloxi, Mississippi (twice); Lakenheath, England; San Angelo, Texas; Knoxville, Tennessee; Wichita Falls, Texas; Laredo, Texas; and Labrador, Canada, before retiring at Vance Air Force Base in Enid, in 1979. Along the way they were blessed with three sons: Alan Lee Spencer of Owasso, Oklahoma; Steven Lawrence Spencer of Waukomis, Oklahoma; and Brian Keith Spencer of Sasebo, Japan.

Once her sons were in school she worked some outside the home being employed at the Laredo AFB Credit Union, Security National Bank of Enid, First National Bank of Enid, and Waukomis State Bank of Waukomis, Oklahoma. She and her husband owned and operated the Ice Cream Churn of Enid and Midwest City, Oklahoma, prior to retiring. She was a longtime member, Sunday School teacher and Puppeteer co-director at Calvary Baptist Church of Enid; at the time of her death she was a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, Enid. She served as Treasurer of the Officer’s Wives Club at Keesler AF Base, Mississippi, and at Goose Bay AF Base, Labrador. She was Family Service Volunteer of the Year at Vance AF Base for 1977-1978, and was nominated for Air Training Command Volunteer of the Year.

She was an avid lifelong participant in all types of crafts, including sewing, crochet, knitting, macramé, decoupage and beads, in addition to oil and acrylic painting for personal enjoyment. A major joy of her life involved many child-oriented activities and travels with her grandchildren. Introduced to photography later in life, she produced a myriad of prints from local sights as well as from numerous travels. She enjoyed physical fitness and had participated in the women’s exercise program at Vance AFB, also teaching yoga there.

Survivors include her husband, Mel, of the home; three children: Alan and wife Kim, Steve and wife Jackie, and Brian; five wonderful grandchildren: Matthew Alan Spencer and wife Hali of Owasso, Oklahoma, Sarah Elizabeth Allison and husband Jason of Fort Knox, Kentucky, Jessica Ann Brown and husband Ryan of Enid, Rachel Lauren Spencer of Owasso, and Julianne Gayle Spencer of Waukomis; two extremely great grandchildren: Abigail Michelle Allison of Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Sawyer Matthew Spencer of Owasso, Oklahoma; and a sister: Amanda Kay Van of McComb, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
