The funeral services for Orville Somers, age 85 will be held at 1:00 pm, Tuesday, February 7, 2012 at the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home Chapel. Rev Lesly Broadbent and Rev James Lambert will officiate. Burial will be in the Aline Star Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
He was born December 23, 1926 near Aline, OK to Jesse H and Cora (Young) Somers and died February 3, 2012 in Enid, OK. He attended Oak Dale Country grade school and graduated from Cleo Springs High School. He lived in the Aline community until moving to Enid in 1968.
Orville served his country for three years during WW II and the Korean War. He was drafted into the Army two days after graduating from High School, May 20, 1945. By the time he finished basic training Japan had surrendered, so he was sent to Germany to serve in the Occupation Forces. He attained the rank of Sergeant. He was stationed in Germany, Japan and South Korea. He received the Army Commendation Medal for service with Press Advisory Division in South Korea. Sgt Somers was discharged from the Army May 21, 1947. He joined the Army Reserves, serving in the Reserves for 6 years. He was called to active duty, October 21, 1950 and was sent to Toyoko, Japan being assigned to the Signal Corp, working in the General Headquarters Press Advisory Division. When the Korean Peace Talks began in June 1951 he was sent to Seoul, Korea as a Teleprinter Operator, Press Advisory Division, Eighth Army Advance. He was awarded the Commendation Ribbon with medal pendant for Meritorious Service with the Press Advisory Division. He was released from active duty, September 10, 1951 and discharged from the Reserves May 21, 1953.
On April 6, 1952 he married Wilma Jean Anthony and they had two daughters, Connie Jean and Joyce Kay. Wilma Jean died November 21, 1987. On July 14, 1989 he married Mary Boyer.
Orville farmed from 1951 – 2006 and also worked at the Vance Air Force Base for 25 years, retiring from Vance in August of 1980. He was active in the Methodist Church all his life and was a member of Willow View Methodist Church at the time of his death. He was a volunteer Mobil Meal Driver from 1983-2005. He was a member of the American Legion and NARF.
He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Wilma Jean, three sisters, two brothers, two daughters, Joyce Wynn and Connie Wilder, her husband Jack and three children, Daniell, Lysle and Amy.
He is survived by his wife Mary of the home, 5 grandchildren, Jennifer, Shawn and his wife, Amanda, Joshua, Adam, Christopher; step-children, Towanda and husband Garry Kirkley and daughter, Jessica Kirkley, David Scherich and wife Kim, Melody Scherich and Patty Montgomery.
