George Kirk Smith joined his loved ones in Heaven on Friday, March 5, 2010. He was 94 years old. Kirk was born on his dad’s birthday, February 26, 1916, to Molly Kirkpatrick Smith and George Irvin Smith in Cochrane Alberta, Canada. The family moved to Greentop, Missouri, and later to Kremlin, OK, where he graduated from high school in 1934. He worked his way through college at Phillips University where he was on the basketball and track teams. He received his B A degree in 1940. That fall he went into the Army’s 45th division. He served in Italy and Austria during WW II as chief of the gun section. He was second lieutenant. He was honorably discharged in 1947.
Kirk married Reva Maxine Lovell on June 10, 1940. As he began his teaching career, Kirk and Reva had three children and during this time, he also earned his Master of Education degree. In 1981, he retired as a teacher/administrator after 36 years.
Kirk served as a 4-H and scout leader for many years. As a member of the Nash Christian Church he served as a teacher, elder, deacon, chairman of the board and on various committees. He was also an honorary elder emeritus. He was a member of Lion’s club, V.F.W. and Nash Senior Citizens. He served on the NODA Advisory Board, Grant Co Health Board and Nash Town Board. Kirk was Oklahoma’s Outstanding Senior Citizen for 1986. He also served as Board Member, President Elect and as a President of Oklahoma Retired Teachers’ Association.
Kirk was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and son-in-law Terry Kirton.
Surviving are his children, Jim & Beth Chestnut, Judy Kirton and Jim and Terry Smith; grandchildren: Greg and Joyce Chestnut, Larry and Jill Secrest, Kim Kirton and Scott Olson and David and Kara Ormston; great grandchildren: Jonathan Kirk Chestnut, Jacob, Lucas, and Kaden Secrest, Katy and Matthew Ormston; sisters, Maralee Lochner and Natalie Wood and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorials may be made to the Nash Christian Church or Nash Fire Department with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds. Condolences may be emailed to the family at ladusauevans@suddenlinkmail.com.
Services will be held Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 10:00 am at the Nash Christian Church. Rev Bobby Smith and Rev Dan O’Daniel will officiate. Burial will be in the New Home Cemetery, Nash, OK.
Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
