Gaylord Smith

September 3, 1918 — February 14, 2011

The funeral service for Gaylord Fred Smith, age 92 will be held Saturday, February

19, 2011 at 2:00 pm at the Hillsdale Bible Church. Rev Curt Zachary will officiate.

Burial will be in the Hillsdale Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of

Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Gaylord was born September 3, 1918 in Battle Creek, MI to Albert and Florence

(Lord) Smith and died February 14, 2011 at St Mary’s Regional Medical Center,

Enid, OK. He graduated from Marshall High School in 1935 and from Moody

Bible Institute in 1938.

He married Beulah May Messenger on August 20, 1938 in Hillsdale, OK. They’ve

been married for 68 happy years.

He was ordained to the gospel ministry at Ainger Bible Church in 1941. His

ministry service includes an Ozark Mountain missionary from 1938-1941; pastor

of the The Gospel Church, Charlotte, MI form 1941-1947; and Evangelist with

Youth Gospel Crusade in Wheaton, IL form 1948-1956; pastor of Clarksville Bible

Church, Clarksville, MI from 1956-1957; interim pastor at the Lockwood

Community Church, Lockwood, MI in 1959; pastor of Enid Bible Church, Enid, OK

from 1962-1967; Chaplin, “Go-Ye” Village retirement community, Tahlequah, OK

from 1979-1991. He also was a dairy farmer in Maple Grove, MI from 1957-1960;

was a grain elevator worker in Hillsdale, OK from 1960-1961 and field

representative and bookstore manager of “Go-Ye” Mission, Tahlequah, OK from

1968-1979;.

Gaylord’s hobbies included carpentry, small engine repair, landscaping,

gardening, wood crafts, crossword puzzles, collecting and writing poetry, listening

to Christian programming and baseball on the radio, watching sports on TV,

visiting parishioners, caring for the sick and elderly and world missions.

He was a member of the IFCA.

His disappointments in life include being disqualified for foreign mission service

due to Scarlet Fever in 1936; the early death of his dad in 1953; the death of his

son, James at the age of 3 and Beulah’s absence since November of 2006.

Survivors include children: Mary E Fletcher of Ponca City, OK, Lois A Janzen

(Gary) of Enid, OK , Faith L Kelley (Jim) of Broken Arrow, OK, Joy D Leister (Tim)

of Gilbert, IA, Deborah G Zachary (Curt) of Springfield, MO; grandchildren: Deana

Fortney, Jeremy Fortney, Eric Janzen, Elisa Beshear, Nathan Kelley, Christina

Lenington, Joel Kelley, Julianne MacLachlan, Felicity Ratajczak, Harmony Spiker,

Kimberly Leister, Sarah Healy, Ryan Zachary, Ben Zachary, Jonathan Zachary,

Anna Zachary, Tyler Zachary, Taylor Zachary, Trinity Zachary, and Gracie Zachary;

and 17 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Beulah, his son, James and

brothers, George and Leland and sister, Marguerite Boakes.
