Funeral services for Joseph Weldon Slaton age 92 of Enid will be 2 pm Tuesday at the Ladusau-Evans chapel with Rev. Tara Batterman officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Monday evening 6-7:30 pm.
Weldon was born April 1, 1921 in Calisburg, TX to James and Iva Arnold Slaton and passed away at his home early Friday June 21, 2013. He grew up in Hobbs, NM. Weldon married Betty Phelps on October 6, 1954 in Sherman, TX. They moved to Enid in 1957 from Whitesboro, TX. He served in the US Army serving as active staff sergeant later serving in US Air Force as a paratrooper 32nd Division Infantry during the WW II. Weldon worked in the oil field, for over 45 years. He was called a legend in his own time in the oil field.
He cherished his wife Betty of 59 years as well as the rest of his family. Weldon was a very loving and giving person, with a very compassionate heart. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and loved gardening. He will be greatly missed by all his family who loves him dearly.
Survivors include his wife Betty of the home, four sons Weldon Eugene Slaton and David Lynn Slaton both of Enid, Joseph Weldon Slaton, Jr and Melvin Slaton both of Rule, TX, two daughters Sharon Denise Buffalohead and Lisa Gayle Ratzlaff both of Enid, 10 grandchildren and several great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter and a grandson, three brothers and four sisters.
