Evelyn Shimanek

A Mass of Christian Burial for Evelyn J. Shimanek age 88 of Enid will be held 10 am Tuesday, December 30, 2014 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Irwin officiating. Burial will be 2:00 pm at the St. Rose of Lima Cemetery in Perry, OK under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. A Rosary will be said 7:00 pm Monday at Ladusau-Evans Chapel.

Evelyn was born January 17, 1926 on the family farm near Hennessey to Paul and Manila Burke Murray and passed away early Wednesday, December 24, 2014 in Integris Bass Baptist Hospital. She attended Hennessey schools, working at the local movie theater and city post office during her youth. On May 1, 1946, she married Henry Shimanek at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bison. She farmed with Henry in the Billings area from 1946 until 1980, raising six children. He passed away February 4, 1982.

In 1968, she began her college education at the age of 42. She attended NOC in Tonkawa and OSU in Stillwater, receiving a Bachelors in Education and a Masters in Guidance & Counseling. She taught one year in Marland and 17 years in Perry in Special Education and Learning Disabilities. She also worked as a private counselor for 10 years.

Evelyn was very active in her churches, St Rose of Lima in Perry and St. Gregory the Great in Enid. She worked at the St. Gregory’s Food Pantry for many years, served as a Eucharistic minister and lector and took communion to shut-ins. She was a member of the Altar Society serving as both President and Secretary, a Church Council member and women’s bible study group member. Evelyn was also a member of the YWCA, Republicans Women’s Club, Chamber of Commerce, OEA, Square Dance Club, Progress Club, Catholic Daughters, PTA, Kappa Delta Pi, Phi Kappa Phi, Retired Teachers Association, Home Demonstration Club and Farm Bureau Women’s Group.

Evelyn loved to travel, visiting five continents and more countries than we can count. She was a voracious reader throughout her life and kept her mind and hands limber by doing needle work daily. She constantly worked to keep up with current events and to stay connected to the modern world. In her last year of life, she joined Facebook to follow her family and friends lives and even learned how to play Candy Crush.

Evelyn is survived by her children, Michael Shimanek and wife Janice of Granbury, TX, Paul Shimanek and wife Denise of Wichita, KS, Margaret Eby and husband Jim of Muskogee, OK, Jean Shimanek of Albuquerque, NM, Ruth Castro and husband Randy of Houston, TX and Kevin Shimanek and wife Mindy of Enid, 19 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren, two brothers, R. J. Murray and wife Cynthia of Shreveport, LA and Richard Murray and wife Sue of Bixby, OK, brother and sister in-laws, George and Belva Shimanek, Agnes Shimanek, Carl and Jo Ann Abady, Teresa Haskins, Don and Stella Shimanek and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her loving and much loved and missed husband Henry, she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Carol Johnson.

Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic School of Enid with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.
