Evelyn Dean Powell, 91, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012. A “Celebration of Life ”will be held on Friday, June 22 nd at 2:00 pm at University Place Christian Church, 2107 E. Broadway in Enid .

Evelyn was born May 18, 1921 in Niantic, Connecticut, to Dr. Wilfred E. and Mary Lois (Lemon) Powell. In 1922, upon her father ’s graduation from Yale, the family moved back to Enid. She graduated from Enid High School in 1939 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Phillips University in 1943. Evelyn then moved to Detroit, Michigan to further her education and received a Master of Science in Medical Technology degree from Wayne University in 1946. After graduating, she worked in Microbiology at Henry Ford Hospital, Mt. Carmel Hospital and taught Microbiology at Mercy College.

Evelyn returned to Enid in 1956 after the death of her mother. She made her home with her father and remained there until 2001, when she moved to Norman to be closer to her sister, Mary Hope Nicar and family. While in Enid, Evelyn worked in the lab at St. Mary ’s Hospital for seven years before taking a position with the Enid State School. She set up and supervised the lab there for the next twenty years. During that time, she also taught Microbiology at Phillips University. Evelyn retired in 1986 after 41 years in the medical technology field.

Evelyn attended University Place Christian Church from the time she was a toddler. While at UPCC, she taught the Junior Girls class, was a deacon, an elder, a leader in Faithbuilders class and was active in CWF. She is most identified, however, with the outreach ministries. She chaired Outreach and was one of the founders of the Mamre soup kitchen. She volunteered many hours for those in need and in 1994, her service to church and community was recognized with the Salt Shaker Award.

Evelyn enjoyed traveling and anything to do with family. She also enjoyed photography and was the family historian. But above all, Evelyn liked nothing better than helping others and devoted her entire life to the church.
