Mary Phillips

October 10, 1924 — March 6, 2011

Mary Frances (Kuwitzky) Phillips was born October 10, 1924 in Kansas City, MO. She died Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Golden Oaks Nursing Center at age 86 as a result of Alzheimer's. She was proceeded in death by her husband, Clifford E. Phillips in 2004; her parents, Al Joseph and Zola Kuwitzky; and her sister, Alois June (Kuwitzky) Phillips. She is survived by her four children: Donna Adkins and husband Fred of Harrah, OK; Carol Woods and husband Rob of Enid; son David Phillips and wife Cheryl of Claremore, OK; and Debbie Linse and husband Mark of Oklahoma City; seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren; two nieces and a nephew from her sister's family and many members of her sister's and her husband's extended family.

Mary was brought to Anadarko, OK as an infant, and later the family moved to Enid where she started second grade. She graduated from Enid High School in 1942. She began working at J.C. Penney while she was still in high school. She worked there for 12 years working her way up to an office manager job, educating herself from the procedure books in the office. She loved her job and really enjoyed working with money and bookkeeping.

She married Clifford E. Phillips June 9, 1946 in Enid.

Later she and her husband owned and operated Phillips Roofing Company in Enid until their retirement in 1983.

Mary was a talented seamstress, homemaker and cook, and a very loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She was totally dedicated to her home and family. In her later years she enjoyed gardening, music, crafts, her family, and her little dogs. After surviving breast cancer in 1988 she became an active volunteer helping Grace Hollrah with her Mastectomy Support Group at Bass Hospital. Mary kept member records, mailed monthly letters and sewed pretty appliqued bags to fill with information and supplies for hospital delivery to new mastectomy patients. She especially enjoyed being a member of the “Line Dance Strutters” that entertained for various groups and retirement centers in Enid. She also volunteered with the RSVP in the records department of the Enid Police Station. While she was still able, she attended Emmanuel Baptist Church.

Her family would like to thank Dr. David Matousek for his years of care and support of Mary and her family; Golden Oaks for her care and home the last six and a half years; and the Hospice Circle of Love for their extra care and family support.

Services will be held Thursday, March 10th at 11 A.M. in the white chapel building at the northwest corner of the Enid Cemetery, (off Willow between North Washington and Grand) under the direction of the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home with Rev. Wade Burleson officiating. The casket will be open at the funeral home this week until 10 A.M. Thursday. It will be closed at the chapel.
