Funeral services for Merritt Eugene Olmstead, age 71 of Perry will be 2 p.m. Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Covington with Rev. Kenneth Wade officiating. Burial will follow in Covington Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Merritt was born December 2, 1939 near Orlando, OK to Ted R. and Audrey Hasbrook Olmstead and he went to his heavenly home on October 22, 2011 at Presbyterian Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA.
He graduated from Marshall High School in 1959 and later graduated from Oklahoma State Tech in Okmulgee. After graduating he was drafted into the Army in August 1963 and served his country in Germany until being discharged in 1965.
He married Eileen Wyssman on October 14, 1967 at St. John’s Lutheran Church. They made their first home in Perry. In 1977, they moved to their present home west of Perry.
Merritt worked for the Perry Fire Department and then worked at Charles Machine Works until his retirement in 2001. The couple has a cattle operation. He enjoyed family, friends and traveling. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, where he served in various capacities. He was member of the American Legion.
Survivors include his wife Eileen of the home, two sons Neal and his wife Carla of Edmond, and Norman and his wife Lori of Oklahoma City; four grandchildren Andrew of Edmond and Kasey, Erin, and Cade of Oklahoma City; two sisters Dorothy Curtis of Durant, and Donna McClure and her husband Bill of Coffeyville, KS; one brother Buell Olmstead and his wife Martha of Covington, mother-in-law Mary Wyssman of Covington, sister-in-law Pat Olmstead of Enid and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Ted E. Olmstead, and a brother-in-law W. L. Curtis
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church Wade Mission or the charity of the donor’s choice with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodians of the funds.
