Betty Jean Meiers, age 84 of Palo Alto, CA formerly of Enid, OK passed away Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Stanford Medical Center, CA.
The daughter of Alta Gano Traylor and Donald Holt Traylor, Betty was born August 26, 1925 in Dodge City, KS and raised in Enid, OK. She attended Enid High School but graduated from high school in Oakland, CA. Her family had moved to California to work at Mare Island Shipyards in Vallejo during WW II. Betty returned to Oklahoma to marry Robert Meiers, whom she fell in love with while both attended Enid High. They were married August 16, 1945 which turned out to be V-J Day ending the war. The newlyweds moved to New Orleans where Betty majored in mathematics at H. Sophie Newcomb College and Robert completed his M.D. studies at Tulane University. In 1957 the couple settled in Palo Alto where Betty raised her two children.
Betty was an avid golfer having been a member of the Stanford Ladies’ 18-hole Golf group for 50 years. She also enjoyed skiing in the Sierras. When she wasn’t golfing she enjoyed shopping and always knew where the best deals could be found. She liked to drive and took many road trips to experience the western U.S. Betty had a wonderful sense of humor and was an easy-going, gentle soul.
She leaves her loving daughter, Jana Sue of Palo Alto and son, Gary Meiers of Sunnyvale. She was predeceased by her parents Alta and Donald, sister, Loa Charlene Cramer, and husband Robert Meiers.
