The Mass of Christian Burial for Melvin J Markes, age 84, will be held Monday, November 12, 2012 at 10:00 am at the Bison Catholic Church. Father Jim Mickus and Father Joseph Arledge will officiate. Burial will be in the Waukomis Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Sunday evening from 6-7 pm at the funeral home. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Melvin was born and raised on the family farm in Waukomis, OK on July 29, 1928 to Clarence and Barbara (Brauner) Markes and died at St Mary’s Regional Medical Center, on November 8, 2012. He graduated from the Waukomis High School in 1946.
He started farming on his own in 1946. He built houses with his brother, Andrew from 1948-1959 and custom combined from 1960-1964. He retired from farming in 1980. On August 1, 1950, Melvin married Wilma Ann Matousek. They lived on the farm until 1982 when they moved to Waukomis.
Survivors include children, Leroy Markes of Enid ,OK, Sharon Crane (Scott) of Enid, OK, Susan Garrett (Kent) of Tulsa, OK, Amy Gragg (Tod) of Waukomis, OK, Margie Lovell (Brian) of Waukomis, OK, Kathy Grimm Cunningham (Lowell) of Fairview, OK, Debbie McClurg (Mike) of Waukomis, OK, Kenny Markes of Bison, OK, and Patrick Markes (Kathy) of Bison, OK ; 21 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; brother-in-law, Ernest Matousek and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Wilma, sister, Anna Marie Conway and brother Andrew Markes.
