Vernon Kuhnemund was born on a farm NW of Lahoma to John and Marie (Rathjen) Kuhnemund on October 13, 1925. He passed away at the Commons Nursing home on Thursday, March 27, 2014. Services will be at Community Bible Church, 1502 S. Logan Road, Lahoma, on Tuesday, April 1, 10:00 AM with Pastor Bill Smith officiating. Interment will be at Zion Lutheran Cemetery in Lahoma with Pastor Eric Brown officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 6 to 7 PM.
Vernon attended parochial school at Zion Lutheran Church in Lahoma from grades 1-8 and graduated from Lahoma High School in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army in 1944 and served in WWII in the Philippines with the 42nd Armored Infantry from March to December of 1945. After returning home he worked at Industrial Iron works and farmed with his dad.
On August 21, 1949, he married Wynona Lee Frey. Together they began their own farming operation that continued until his retirement. He was a true steward of the land and was recognized many times for his farming practices. Vernon was on the Garfield County Conservation Service from 1975-1996, the NODA Board of Directors from 1979-2009 and the Lahoma Farmer’s Coop from 1966-1984. He received the Greater Enid Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Farmer Award in 1985, the Master Oklahoma Farmer-Stockman Award in 1989 and the DV Nelson Award for his work on the Turkey Creek Flood Control Project in 2003. He was a member of the American Legion, the DAV and Community Bible Church.
Vernon was an avid OU fan. He also loved watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sporting events and stock shows.
Surviving are his wife, Wynona, of the home in Lahoma, daughter Connie Barnes and husband Gene of Hennessey and son Daryl and his wife Shannon of Lahoma. Also five grandchildren: Brady Barnes and wife Cara of Hennessey, Brett Barnes and wife Amy of Lahoma, Jennifer Edwards and husband Jeffrey of Duncan, Jessica Kuhnemund of OKC and Jon Kuhnemund of Enid. He is also survived by eight great grandchildren, Cameron, Cassidy, Callen, Brylee and Brayson Barnes and Cooper, Ellie and Olivia Edwards. Also surviving is one sister, Leadell Grauberger of Enid and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and Kenneth and two sisters, Marcella Dykes and Velma Jean Kehn.
