Donna Hughes

April 3, 1952 — October 24, 2015

Funeral Service for Donna Jean Hughes age 63 of Enid will be 2:00 pm Wednesday at the Christ United Methodist Church with Rev. Kim Domnick and Rev. Jim Jones officiating. Burial will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. The family will receive friends Tuesday, October 27, from 6:30 to 7:30 at the funeral home.

Donna was born April 3, 1952 in Bloomington, IL to Milford Isaac and Mary Catherine Arrant Davis and passed away Saturday, October 24, 2015 at her home after a battle with cancer. She spent her early childhood in Dewitt, IL before the family moved to California. She attended school in Santa Maria, CA until the family moved to Henry, IL when she was a teenager and later the family moved to Chickasha, OK where Donna graduated from Chickasha High School.

Donna received her Nurse’s Aide training at the Vo-Tech in Chickasha. She later completed her LPN Nurse’s training at Canadian Valley Vo-Tech in El Reno, OK. She was working as Director of Nurse’s at Shannon Springs Nursing Home in Chickasha, when she met her husband Steven John Hughes. They later moved to Enid where Donna worked in several church child care programs and nurseries including First United Methodist Church’s “Mother’s Day Out Program” and Christ United Methodist Church’s “Children’s Day Out Program.” She later attended Phillips University and received her Bachelor of Science in Education Degree. Donna taught sixth grade at McKinley Elementary School and later at Garfield Elementary School. She spent the last few years working part-time teaching at Garfield and Adams Elementary Schools.

Donna and her husband Steve opened Hughes Pharmacy in Medford in 2012 and was involved in the operating the drug store.

Donna loved nature and wanted to be outdoors at parks and camping. She always stated that she felt closed to God when outdoors and her spirituality was based a lot on her feelings about nature. She loved to travel and see different parts of the country. She learned to knit and enjoyed not only knitting, but purchasing different yarns and had quite a collection. She loved all kinds of music. Each of her children played an instrument in band or orchestra while in school and she enjoyed it all whether it was marching band with Jennifer, orchestra or symphony with Steven, jazz band with Ashley and Roger, or concert and marching band with Matthew. Most people did not know that she was born deaf in one ear and was told at an early age that she had perfect pitch. She loved to sing in choir and glee club while in school. She loved to hear gospel quartet music, rock and roll and country western music. A fellow student in high school, Gordon Payne, was the back-up singer to Waylon Jennings and she would always like to listen to Waylon Jennings songs and would say she could hear Gordon’s voice in the background. She had a passion for teaching and it was common for her to be at the mall or other places of business and former students would come up to her and want to visit. She always made friends wherever she was and had many friends throughout the churches and teaching community. She would go with family to amusement parks but would sit on a bench while the children would ride the rides. When they returned she would always have someone she had met and had a story about where they were from, where they were staying, or interesting things she had learned about them from visiting with them. She was not an avid sports fan but would go to football games with her husband or sit beside him on the couch while he watched sports just to be with him. She wanted to do everything together and her love of her family and children were very important. She loved holidays and always wanted every holiday to be special and wanted her children and family to share it with her. She was the guardian angel, the wind beneath their wings, the voice that keeps saying to never give up and with her was the safe place you could always call home.

Donna is survived by her husband Steve, of the home, five children, Jennifer Lynn Fowler and husband Adam of Dayton, OH, Steven John Hughes II of Fort Smith, AR, Ashely Hughes of Enid, Roger Allen Hughes and wife Elizabeth of Midway Park, NC and Aaron Matthew Hughes of Enid, two grandsons, Mason Alexander Nance and Carter Xavier Nance, five sisters and brothers, Milford J.
