The funeral service for Charles D Herring, age 90 will be held Saturday, September 4, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home Chapel. Rev Jim Edmison will officiate. Burial will be in the Memorial Park Cemetery.
Charles was born February 5, 1920 in Gatesville, TX to Charlie N and Sarah (Shirey) Herring and died August 30, 2010 in Oklahoma City, OK. He left school in 1938 to join the Civilian Conservation Corps and remained in the CCC until 1942. He entered the U S Army Air Corp in 1942 as a Buck Private and retired from the U S Air Force 24 years later as a Master Sergeant. During his stay in the Air Force he served in various places in the CONUS, overseas tours include Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska and 667th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron, Iceland. He retired in December 1966 and his military decorations include the Army Good Conduct Medal, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award, World War II Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal and several other service ribbons.
In February of 1967 he came to Enid and began work for Serv-Air, Inc as an Assistant Food Service Supervisor. In 1968 he became the Food Service Superintendent for Serv-Air, Inc and continued in that capacity until 1972. In 1972 when Northrop gained the contract, he began work for Northrop as the Superintendent of Food Services.
Charles married Lillian Cook in 1972. She preceded him in death on June 25, 2006. He enjoyed dominos and gardening and his favorite Soap was “Days of Our Lives.”
Survivors include his four sons, Charles Ray, Kent, Jerry, Kim and daughter, Karen; 11 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren; brother, Claude Herring and sister, Louise Schmidt.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lillian, and brothers, H.L. and Roy Herring.
