Isabel Teubel Herbst went to glory on Tuesday, August 23, 2011. At the time of her death, she was a resident of Grace Living Center. Prior to Grace, she lived in Perkins from September 2005 after moving from Enid where she and her husband, the late Joe Herbst, had lived since 1969.
Isabel was born in Valley Falls, Kansas on October 25, 1925. In 1935, her parents, Henry and Vera Reed Teubel, moved the family to Tulia, Texas. Isabel graduated from Tulia High School at age 16. After graduation, she enrolled at Texas Tech College to study Chemistry. In her forth year, she met her best friend and loving husband of 51 years, Joseph Edson Herbst. They married on September 2, 1945. They moved to Denver so Joe could pursue an engineering degree. However, the family business called them back to Borger, Texas. Later, oilfield employment took the family to Houma, Louisiana, Ulysses, Kansas and finally to Enid, Oklahoma.
While being a wife and mother to three children, Fritz, Katrina and Hanz, Isabel had several interesting occupations. She was a school teacher, a soda fountain clerk, a proof reader, a soil tester for the Kansas Highway Department and a concrete inspector for the Bureau of Reclamation that built a dam at Fritch Texas. When After moving to In Enid, Oklahoma, Isabel again worked as a soil tester for the Garfield County Engineers. She later transferred to the County Clerks office, where after achieving 1st deputy status, she worked until her retirement in 1988. After Joe died in February 1997, Isabel returned to work for a short time as a title researcher for Stillwater National Bank.
Isabel is survived by her sister, Annabel Holcomb, of Farmington, New Mexico; her three children, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Son, Fredrick Charles (Fritz) Herbst II, his wife Jan Drake Herbst of Brenham, Texas. Fritz and Jan have three children: daughter Kristi and her husband Chad Kincaid with son Gareth and daughter Karis; son Karl and his wife Mary Katherine and their children, Katherine Rose, Grace Elizabeth and Emily Faith Herbst; and daughter Karen and husband David Tass; Her daughter Katrina and Randy Jarvis and their son Joseph of Perkins; and Her son Henry Nicholas (Hanz) Herbst and his wife Pat Lynch of Norman. And a host of extended family of Jarvis’and Holcombs.
Isabel attended church all her life, and she was an enthusiastic bible student and teacher. She was a positive influence on anyone who studied with her. Her strong faith and devotion were examples of Christ’s unconditional love to those around her.
Isabel had a zest for life and was loved and adored by her family, extended family and a host of friends wherever she lived.
We rejoice at her reunion with the saints, and we will miss her quick wit and beautiful smile.
Visitation will be Friday, August 26, from 6-8 p.m. at Lost Creek United Methodist Church, 8002 S Washington, Stillwater, OK 74074. The funeral services will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at Lost Creek, with graveside at Memorial Park Cemetery, Enid, OK at 3 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
