Harriett Hamm

June 20, 1921 — February 26, 2010

Harriett Pauline Hamm, always an angel, went to the Lord on February 26, 2010 surrounded by her family at Golden Oaks Retirement Village, Enid, OK.

Harriett was born June 20, 1921 in Covington, OK to Wallace and Louise Melvin. She was raised in Covington and attended Covington schools, graduating in 1938.

After graduating from Enid Business College, she first worked in Enid, then went to Washington DC where she worked at Headquarters, United States Marine Corps prior to and throughout World War II.

On August 9, 1942, Harriett married William (Bill) Hamm from the Covington-Garber Oil Field whom she met at Enid Business College. Harriett remained in Washington DC while Bill served overseas as a B-24 pilot with 8th Air Force, 442nd Bomb Group. They were married for 67 years.

Returning to Covington following the war, Harriett graduated from Enid Beauty College. She then opened and ran a beauty salon in Covington for 18 years. After closing the beauty salon, she then went to work in the Garfield County District Court Clerks office retiring as the District Court Clerk after 23 years.

Harriett truly loved and was very involved in the Covington United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was also very active in the Order of Eastern Star serving in all stations in the Covington Chapter, then as a District Deputy and finally as Grand Ruth of Oklahoma.

Harriett always with a smile on her face, really enjoyed traveling in the motor home, winters in south Texas, china painting and fishing with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her brother, George Edward Melvin and his wife Louise.

Harriett is survived by her husband, Bill, her son, Melvin Hamm, Capt USN (ret) and wife Jennifer of San Diego, CA; daughter Dreda Ryder and husband Bill of Farmersville, TX; four grandchildren and two great grand children.

Services will be Monday, March 1, 2010 at 2:00 pm at the Covington United Methodist Church, Covington, OK with burial in the Covington Cemetery. Shorty Unruh will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to the Covington United Methodist Church with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home as custodian of the funds. Condolences may be emailed to the family at ladusauevans@suddenlinkmail.com.
