Gladys (Geis) Nokes passed away on August 26, 2024 at Baptist Village, surrounded by family. Gladys Marie Geis was born on October 20, 1940 to Edwin and Lola Geis. She grew up on a farm near Cherokee, where she developed a love for animals. Gladys attended Northwestern University where she met her future husband, Paul Schickedanz. They married December 17, 1960 and moved to Illinois several years later. Sometime after that they were blessed with two children, Jill (Schickedanz) Kyle and Lance Schickedanz. After losing Paul to a car accident in 1977, Gladys raised her children on her own. She eventually met and married Elmer “Mickey” Nokes in 1996, and moved back to Cherokee.

Gladys was passionate about her faith, serving in church by playing a variety of instruments. She loved to play the old hymns on the piano or organ. She also loved entertaining as part of the Smith and Nokes comedy duo with her cousin Margaret Smith. They spent several years traveling and performing for a variety of functions. Gladys also greatly loved all animals, but especially her cats. She had a knack for attracting them and taking them in! Finally, Gladys loved her family. In addition to her son and daughter, she was blessed with her son-in-law Jeff Kyle and daughter-in-law Jennifer Schickedanz; six granddaughters (Hannah Kyle Austin, Abigail Kyle, Rachel Kyle, Sarah Kyle, Hayley Schickedanz and Maia Schickedanz), and recently a great-grandson (Henry Austin). She was also thankful to have gained two step-daughters and one step-son through her marriage to Mickey (Sherri Hill, Terri Woodbury, and Mark Nokes); and three step-grandchildren (Daniel Hill, Joshua Hill, and Grace Hill Eldridge).

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Paul, her husband Mickey, her brother and sister-in-law, her parents, and her step-son Mark.
