Eldon Eugene Layton made it to his final resting place the morning of September 23, 2024. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Burial in Memorial Park Cemetery will follow.
Eldon Eugene Layton was born to Hazel and Emel (Leo) Layton on June 23, 1932 in the farmlands of Dewey County, Oklahoma. Gene had many fond childhood memories he loved to share. He liked to talk about his father and his team of horses. He would say proudly how he respected his father's work ethic, something Gene followed later in his life. He deeply loved his mother.
Later, Gene enlisted in the army and served his country during the Korean War. He also had many nieces and nephews that served. He was patriotic. He was proud to help place two of his nephews on the Enid Vietnam Memorial Wall.
On June 2, 1951, Gene married Lois Elaine Smith in Enid, Oklahoma where they made their home for over 73 years. To the couple a baby boy was born, Terry Eugene Layton.
Gene was an independent truck driver that hauled grain in five states. He owned many trucks and was able to mechanic them all. He worked hard to provide for his family.
Gene enjoyed living life to its fullest and had a free spirit when it came to the open road and adventure, something he shared with his granddaughter, Traci. She would accompany him on his week-long hauls. His grandson, Travis, made him proud because of his exceptional mechanical ability and his dedication to his family. Gene retired in 1986 and dedicated his life to being present for his wife, son and grandchildren.
He loved to take his wife dancing. He was the ballfield 'grandpa' and the grandkids' teammates loved to chat with him. Gene had a sense of humor many thought was endearing. He loved playing golf with his son and his buddies. He took many vacations with his grandkids and wife.
He maintained a boat and camper so his son and grandchildren could ski and fish. His adventurous and fiercely independent spirit will be missed.
He is preceded in death by his sons Terry and Denny Layton and wife Lois Layton.
