Treva Jean Hibbs Dougherty, 87, was born in Latimer, KS, to Howard Lambert and Ruth Eva Pond Storms Hibbs on December 9, 1923, and passed away on February 14, 2011, at Greenbrier Nursing Home in Enid, OK.
The family moved often during her childhood and lived in Enid in 1936-38 during which time Treva attended and graduated from Emerson Junior High School. She also attended Central Christian Church with her parents and sister and all were members of the choir. Treva graduated from Salina (Kansas) High School - class of 1941, attended the Kansas City Conservatory of Music from 1941-43, is an alumna of Indiana State University at Terre Haute - class of 1945 (which was Indiana State Teacher¹s College at the time). Her voice teacher at the conservatory, Constance Eberhart, urged her to go to New York City to pursue a professional singing career. While in New York, she studied with Helen Fouts Cahoon who was also voice coach for Mary Martin, Cloris Leachman and the Andrews Sisters.
It was in New York City that she met Domer Vincent Dougherty and chose to abandon pursuit of a singing career in favor of becoming a wife and mother. They were married on December 29, 1946, in Terre Haute. The couple lived in Norman, OK, while Domer attended the University of Oklahoma. They moved to Garber, OK, when Domer took a teaching job at Garber High School. They ended up in Enid in 1951 when Domer started teaching at Phillips University. He passed away in February 1983.
Treva worked in a glass factory during WWII as part of the war effort. In 1945-46 she worked in the program department of the American Association of Composers, Authors and Publishers. She then worked at the family business, The Dougherty Press, until its close in 2004.
While raising six children, she was a stay-at-home mom . She was kept busy attending various activities with her children including music and dance lessons, rehearsals, concerts, competitions, plays, horse shows, and softball games.
Treva was involved in the AAUW, YWCA, PTA, Girl Scouts, Enid Little Theater, Gaslight Theatre, Enid Symphony Auxiliary, Enid Oratorio Society, Greater Enid Arts and Humanities Council and Phillips University Women. She was a long-time supporter of the Enid Symphony Orchestra, a charter member of the League of Women Voters in Enid and served on the Advisory Committee for Printing and Graphic Arts at Autry Vo-Tech. For many years, she was an active member of Central Christian Church where she was a member of the Chancel Choir, Adult Handbell Choir and accompanied the children¹s choirs. She shared her musical talent singing at church and for funeral services and teaching piano lessons. For many years she volunteered in the headquarters office during Tri-State Music Festival and also served as a vocal judge.
She enjoyed working crossword and word find puzzles while watching the birds and other wildlife in her backyard. She was an avid fan of the New York Yankees and also loved watching tennis, golf and figure skating on TV. She was a cook, seamstress, gardener and avid reader.
