Wendell was born February 10, 1932 in Pratt, Kansas to Frank Detwiler and Ethel (Kilgore) Detwiler, the youngest of ten children. He attended school in Pratt, Kansas until he joined the USAF in 1946. After successfully completing boot camp, the USAF discovered he was only 14, and he was sent back to his mother until 1949 when he was able to join the USAF again and served until he was medically discharged in 1951. After his military service he remained in the Pratt area until he moved to Enid in 1972, where he remained until his death.

On June 25, 1979 he married the love of his life, Doris (Brown) Detwiler. Their combined families were a source of great joy and pride for both. She preceded him in death.

Wendell worked several jobs throughout his life, most of them related to the oilfield. He was a well-known and respected derrick hand. Wendell was proud of his 63 year affiliation with the American Legion and was awarded a 60 Year Continuous Member Certificate in May of 2013. During his retirement he enjoyed collecting and selling scrap metal. As his health became frail, the neighbors commented how much they missed visiting with him as he tinkered away in his garage, always with the door wide open no matter how hot or cold it was outside.

Wendell is survived by son, Gale Taylor and his wife Kathy of Elk City, OK; son, Michael Detwiler and his wife Debra of Iuka, KS; sons, Lendl Detwiler and Robert Detwiler, both of Enid, OK; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Ford and a daughter, Judy Foster.
