A Celebration of Life for Eldon “Red” Charles, age 88, of Enid, is 2:00 pm, Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Vernon Lee officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Garber Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.
Eldon was born November 21, 1928 in Keyes, Oklahoma to Howard A. and Buna (McCrea) Charles, and passed away Friday, October 27, 2017 in Enid.
While serving in the United States Navy during the Korean War, he married Ruth Osburn on February 18, 1950 in Yuma, Arizona. Eldon was a fireman for the Enid Fire Department for 22 years, and following retirement from Enid Fire Department, he served on the Vance Air Force Base Fire Department for 13 more years. During this time he attended Enid Business College where he earned an Associate’s Degree in business. He also worked as an insurance adjuster, working for Dillingham Insurance Agency, Ray Soloman Insurance Adjusters, and then started crop adjusting working from the Dakotas to Texas. Even with his very busy life, he still made time for Nadine and the children. He coached the boys’ little league football and baseball teams in Enid. He was also an avid hunter and fisherman, passing the tradition on to his sons and grandsons.
Eldon is preceded in death by his parents, Howard and Buna Charles, his wife Nadine, and granddaughter, Gina Crow. He is survived by three children, Connie Crow and husband Jim, of Enid; Terry Charles and wife Charlene, of Enid; Garry Charles and wife Sonrisa, of Medicine Bow, Wyoming; eight grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; sister Mary Hildebrandt and husband Jack, of Broken Arrow, OK; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation Alzheimer’s Division with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
