Robert Thomas Cassody, resident of Enid, Oklahoma, passed away January 20, 2014, surrounded by his beloved family. He was 86.
Robert was born the son of Aaron Thomas Cassody and Virgie (Murphy) Cassody on July 8, 1927, at the Cassody homestead northeast of Covington, Okla. He attended Mason, a one room rural school, and Garber Schools. Bob was active in 4-H and FFA. He enlisted in the Merchant Marines at age 17 and served on ships in the North Atlantic and South Pacific. He reenlisted in the army and served in the 187th Glider Infantry Regiment, 11th Airborne Division, and served as both glider and paratrooper. He was honorably discharged as a sergeant at age 20 and returned to Garber High School and graduated.
He married his high school sweetheart Evelyn Hays, on June 6, 1948, in Enid, Okla. They were blessed with four children and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.
Bob was active in the farming and cattle industries for 65 years. He continued to be active in 4-H and FFA as a booster. He served on the Covington School board, OT Autry Vo-tech board, MAPC Board of Enid, Rural Rotatory, and American Legion. A long term member of Covington First Baptist Church of Covington he served many positions. After moving to Enid in 1995 he became a member of Emmanuel Baptist Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Evelyn of the home; daughters Patti Henderson and Connie Herlihy of Edmond, Okla., Janet Chelf and husband Dr. John Chelf of Tulsa, Okla.; son, Tom Cassody and wife Sherry of Covington, Okla.; grandchildren, Stacie Jackson and husband Matthew of Frisco, Texas, Carrie Brewster and husband Erik of Livingston, Montana, Dr. Kelli Herlihy Dyer and husband Dr. Steven Dyer of Tulsa, Okla., Parker Henderson of Edmond, Okla., Jennie Sappington and husband Tony of Oologah, Okla., Richard Herlihy of Jackson, WY, Weston and Garrett Cassody of Covington, Okla. Great grandchildren; Keegan and Kylie Jackson of Frisco, Texas, Avery, Hunter, Holden, and Hadley Henderson of Edmond, Okla., Spencer Dyer of Tulsa, Okla., Jentrie, Trinity, and Sadie Sappington of Oologah, Okla., and baby boy Brewster joining the family in April.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Virginia Staerkel, brother George Cassody, and grandson Conor Henderson.
A funeral service will be 1:00 PM January 22, 2014 at First Baptist Church, Covington, Okla., with Pastors Tommy Donaldson and Ted Kuschel officiating. Services are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Covington Cemetery, Covington, Oklahoma.
