Marjorie Thornton

A Memorial Service for Marjorie Ruth (Jantz) Funk-Thornton, age 90, of Enid, will be 10:00 am, Monday, December 17, 2018 at Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Williams officiating. Marjorie will be laid to rest in Memorial Park Cemetery under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home.

Marjorie was born December 17, 1927 in Enid, to Irving and Martha Blanche (Convill) Jantz, and passed away Thursday, December 6, 2018 at Greenbrier Village in Enid.

She attended Enid Public Schools, Adams Elementary School, Longfellow Junior High School and graduated from Enid High School in 1945 receiving her business training there.

Marjorie married William W. Funk on July 7, 1946 in the First United Methodist Church in Enid. Together they raised three children. She was a homemaker and he was employed by the U.S. Postal Service. Also, as joint contractors, they built several homes in Enid. They made their home in Enid for almost thirty-one years until Bill’s death in 1977, when Marjorie was only 49 years old at the time. She later met and then married Emery L. Thornton in the Christian Church, Pacific Grove, California. They lived in several cities on the Monterey Peninsula, California. Following his retirement from 23 years of service in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Postal Service, he and Marjorie moved to Pea Ridge, Arkansas, located north of Rogers, Arkansas. She also enjoyed the association with her parents when they retired to Rogers, Arkansas in 1979. They moved back to Enid in 1986 as a help for her aging parents. Marjorie and Emery were married almost fifteen years before he preceded her in death in 1992.

She loved being a homemaker but was also employed as a legal stenographer for the Enid law firm Simon, Simon, Mitchell and Hedrick, and for various law and real estate firms in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Rogers, Arkansas. She eventually retired from the office of Ranney-Davis Wholesale Grocers, of Enid, Oklahoma.

Marjorie was a Charter Member of the First Seniors AMBUCS civic organization serving on the Board of Directors and as Secretary; also a Charter Member and Secretary for the local chapter of National Association for the Uniformed Services (NAUS); a Charter Member of the World War II Memorial, Washington, D.C. and an Active Member and acting Treasurer of the Enid High School Class of 1945. As hobbies, she enjoyed piano and music, reading, computer, crocheting, needlework and in earlier years, sewing wardrobes for her children.

She became a Christian and was baptized at the age of nine, dedicating her life then and through all her adult years to serving her Lord Jesus, her marriage mates, and her family and friends with all her heart. She was a member of the Enid Calvary Baptist Church, Ruth Sunday School Class.

Marjorie is survived by two daughters and a son; Kathleen A. (Funk) Schweitzer of Bowie, Maryland; Julie M. (Funk) Snow and husband Ronald, of Enid; son Terry W. Funk and wife Harriett, of El Paso, Texas; two granddaughters, Bonnie (Schweitzer) Bottner and husband Michael, of Crofton, Maryland; Dixie D. (Snow) Cooper and husband Eric, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; two grandsons, William H. Schweitzer and wife Rhiannon, of Seoul, Korea; Preston W. Snow and wife Sarah, of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two great-grandsons, Brady Wyatt Snow and Erickson Grant Cooper; seven great-granddaughters, Madelyn Marie Snow, Daisy Anne Cooper, Caroline Kathleen Bottner, Faith Aurelia Bottner, Lorelai McKayla Schweitzer, Alyssa Leilani Schweitzer, and Jillian Rachael Bottner; step-daughter, Karen G. (Thornton) Woods-Iske and husband Alan, of Weaverville, California; two sisters, Carolee M. (Jantz) DeWitt, of Keller, Texas; M. Kay (Jantz) Boaz and husband Robert, of Decatur, Texas; step-grandchildren; step-great-grandchildren; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Bill and Emery; son-in-law, Henry (Hank) W. Schweitzer; step-son Dennis H. Thornton; step-grandson, Joel D. Woods; and two very special British friends for over sixty-five years, Margaret M. and George W. Hart of Burgh-le-Marsh, Lincolnshire, England; wonderful friends and neighbors.

Marjorie expressed that she had received many wonderful years of blessings from those who touched her life and especially from her beloved daughters and son and their families. Her hope was that all her family would continue to work diligently serving others in a Christian manner.

Memorials are appreciated and may be made to the Ruth Sunday School Class, Calvary Baptist Church of Enid, with Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home serving as custodian of the funds.
