Obituary for Ripley Edwin McCoy
Ripley (Rip) Edwin McCoy, 72, beloved husband, father, son, brother, and friend, of Hunter, Oklahoma, passed away peacefully in his home on November 11, 2022.
Rip was born on November 18, 1949, in Columbus, Mississippi to Clayton McCoy and Dorothy Huffman McCoy. Due to Clayton’s career as a firefighter, the family moved to Mission, Texas, then back to Columbus, then to Enid, Oklahoma, where he worked at Vance A.F.B. Rip graduated from Enid High School in 1969 and worked as a car mechanic after that, including owning his own shop in Enid.
He and Joyce Lynn Wright married on February 18, 1977, and celebrated their 42nd anniversary in 2018. They had 3 children: Ripley, and his wife Ashly, of Newcastle, Oklahoma, Charles and his wife, Sara, and son Ezra, of Perkins, Oklahoma, and Heather Desellier and son Ethan, of Kent, Washington. During Joyce’s health issues in the last few years of her life, Rip was devoted to her every need 24 hours per day until her death on January 16, 2019.
Rip had a daughter, Kaye McBride, born in 1971, who was adopted into a loving family, and came into his life in 2015, giving him closure and peace. Kaye and her husband, Charles live in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and have 2 sons, Connor and Logan. Rip and Joyce were very happy to welcome all of them into their family.
Rip was active on the town council of Hunter and was never shy about speaking up against possible misdeeds, sometimes to the annoyance of others. He had a strong moral compass, a unique sense of humor (he loved to say that he had terminal cuteness), and a soft heart he tried to keep hidden. Rip had a passion for motorcycles, cars, and music. He took many trips across the country on his motorcycles, including to Sturgis, ND. He and Joyce loved trips to Colorado to go to blues festivals. He made the decision to skydive in October of this year and did a tandem jump. He loved it and was planning to do another. Rip was highly intelligent with an amazing memory and loved to tell stories from his life…sometimes over and over again. Rip’s was truly a life well-lived, with a strong commitment to responsibility, combined with an adventurous spirit.
Rip was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Patrice McCoy. He is survived by two sisters, Linda Scott, of Hurst, Texas, and Diane Black and husband Steve, of Enid, Oklahoma, his children, his grandsons, and many friends.
Rip requested that there not be a service of any kind. His ashes will be joined with Joyce’s and will be spread in Colorado, a place they both loved.
