Opal was born August 17, 1926, in Enid to Eldo D. and Amanda (Schweer) Heim and passed away June 6, 2021 in Enid. She was made a child of God through baptism on August 22, 1926, by Rev. JH Holtmann at St. Paul’s Enid. She also confirmed her faith at Grace Lutheran Church, OKC on May 26, 1940, by Rev. Paul J. Hartenberger. Opal graduated from Enid High School with the class of 1944. The lessons and memorizations from her early years served her well and gave her comfort in her later years.
Opal married Lavern Gragert on May 23, 1948, at Grace Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City. After she and Lavern married, they made their home in Enid and were members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Opal was a life long member of the choir and active in LWML. She was a member of Desk and Derrick. Opal and Lavern enjoyed traveling with the OnGoers and visiting their grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Kris Young (Ron), Enid; Paula Adler (Steve), Parker, CO; son-in-law, Montie Walton, Enid. Grandchildren: Amy Young Doyle (Warren); Jennifer D. Adler; Kyle R. Young (Nikki); Amanda Adler Scherdin (Jeffrey); Toby G. Young; Kristopher J. Adler. Great grandchildren: Rylee, Camryn and Mia Doyle; Kylee and Coltyn Young; Avery Scherdin; Kaleb Coleman. Step-grandchildren: Dustin Walton (Lindsey) and Perry Walton (Nicole). Their children are Lucas, Madelyn, Jack, Abigail and Hannah. Brother-in-law, Robert E. Carlson, Rockford, IL.
Opal is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Lavern; two sisters, Marguerite Carlson and Florene Wyssmann Pralle; brother, Laverne (Bud) Heim; her beloved daughter, Ruth Walton. Also preceded by an infant daughter, and an infant great grandson, Gabriel Scherdin.
Memorial donations can be made to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Ladusau-Evans serving as custodian of the funds.

We lived next door to Opal and Lavern for 19 years. They have loved us and watched our kids grow up. I often found the kids chatting over the back fence with Lavern, and they will forever ask for ice cream when they're sick (Lavern's remedy for any ailment)! Their front porch was a safe haven, and after long days of mothering small children, I would often "run away" to next door to chat with Opal, while she tended and cared for her flowers. We miss them both and are so very blessed to have them in our lives.

I LOVE this! I am one of Opal & LaVern’s grandchildren, and this description brought tears to my eyes! So spot on. GG & GGPa we’re such amazing people and loved so many, while also leaving an impact on so many peoples lives. And it’s true…there isn’t much some ice cream cannot cure ❤️ Thank you for your kind words and warm memories. Amanda Scherdin
