Obituary for Vernon Ivan Unruh

Vernon Ivan Unruh was born May 6, 1922 on a farm south of Goltry, OK to Dave and Marie (Wadel) Unruh. Vernon attended Star Center, near Meno, graduating from Helena High School in 1942. He joined the Army Air Corp in 1942 serving as a crew chief and aircraft engine mechanic. He was stationed in Enid, OK, Del Hart, TX and Frederick, OK. After his discharge he married Virginia McNickle and farmed in the Goltry, OK area; later he worked as an oil and gas distributor in Aline. Vernon went to work for Conoco in 1954 as an oil blender, retiring in 1977. He married Opal Hullet on July 14, 1965 in the Woodland Christian Church of Ponca City, OK. The family moved to Tonkawa in 1967. After Opal’s death he moved to Golden Oaks in Enid.



Vernon is survived by a son, Kevin Unruh of Ponca City, OK, daughter Judy Hullet Wear and husband Steve of Gainsville, VA, Connie Mack Hullet and his wife Patricia of Blackwell, OK, grandson Marc Wear and his wife Sabrina and great granddaughters Elena and Cecilia of Alexandria, VA; a brother, Wayne Unruh and his wife, Edith of Enid, OK and his special childhood friend Emaline Smith of Enid.



He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Opal, granddaughter, Bethany Wear and sisters, Marcena Johnson and Hazel Pekrul and a brother, Cecil.



A graveside service will be held at the Rest Haven Cemetery in Ponca City, OK on Friday, March 4, 2011 at 11:00 am. The memorial service will be held at Golden Oaks Nursing Home Chapel on Saturday, March 5, 2011 at 10:00 am. Chaplain Shorty Unruh will officiate. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home. A memorial contribution may be made to Grace Mennonite Building Fund or Hope Outreach.
